In my Kitchen-May 2014

vanilla bean paste on a spoon and vanilla beanSomething a little different this week. This post is inspired by Celia’s blog, Fig Jam and Lime Cordial and she runs a monthly themeIn My Kitchen“, where bloggers showcase some of their kitchen treasures. If you are a blogger why not join in and let us have a peek at what’s in your kitchen.

In my kitchen you will always find vanilla and lots of little spoons. Filled with vanilla paste, this heart-shaped spoon with an infinity knot on the handle symbolizes how much we love the flavor of vanilla in our family. It’s easy to make your own vanilla bean paste, especially if you bulk buy vanilla beans.

Truffles in a jarIn my kitchen I can journey into the world of Italian truffles with this beautiful and informative book on “Truffles The Divine Earth” by Serogio Rossi. Can you imagine the joy of finding the largest white truffle ever recorded weighing in at 1497 grams and valued at 333,000 dollars. That’s a lot of truffle happiness. The book and truffles were a gift from a lovely friend. 🙂 🙂
frangipani flowers in a vaseI like to hoard jars and containers and needing extra props for my photography, could not throw away this lovely ceramic jar. It was once filled (pulled from a keg) with a gorgeous mustard from the Maille boutique while visiting France… bit of sentimental value in there too. In my kitchen it makes a perfect vase for holding these beautiful leafy flowers from the frangipani tree… I wish you could smell their gorgeous perfume. These pretty flowers add a lovely splash of color to a table setting when entertaining.

measuring bowlsThis cute set of measuring bowls are from Pachachic, a lovely shabby chic store in Bahrain. You will definitely see these bowls feature in some future photos, a perfect size for some of my food photography. Of course, they would also make a lovely gift for someone. The set of measuring bowls (there are four) are from the Katie Alice collection and when I first spotted them, they reminded me of an old-fashioned bowl my mother used in her kitchen.

sesame paste-tahinaI always store  a container of Tahina (sesame paste) in my kitchen for making family favorites like baba ganoush and hummus. We also like to use tahina as a dip for vegetables or a sauce for some wraps. Love this wonderful ingredient.

What special treasures do you keep in your kitchen?

  1. Beautiful cook’s tools! I am in love with that little heat-shaped spoon. The mustard crock is also lovely – I always save mine from Pommery mustard, but it has a squatter (not as elegant) shape as yours. Great post.

  3. Hi Moya. You have so many lovely things in your kitchen, thank you for sharing them. I feel like I go through buckets of vanilla paste, so I will have to try making your home made vanilla paste. I also love your idea of making a vanilla salt…yum!

    1. Making your own vanilla products is easy and only cost effective if you can bulk buy vanilla beans. I do hope you try making the vanilla salt and paste… let me know if you do or have any tips of your own. Thank your for visiting. 🙂

  4. So lovely to have a peek in your kitchen. (Isn’t Celia wonderful to lets us blog hop to visit other kitchens?) I am also in love with that spoon, and the idea that it shows how much your family loves vanilla bean paste is priceless. I have a jar of tahini too. I like to add some to yoghurt to make a tasty salad dressing.

    1. Thank you for visiting my kitchen Anne. Celia’s monthly theme In My Kitchen is wonderful idea. Tahini in salad dressing is lovely too and also delicious when paired with chocolate. 🙂

  5. Moya, thanks for joining in! Your little measuring bowls are just too gorgeous for words, and I can completely understand keeping that lovely mustard jar – the perfect foil for your stunning frangipanis. We adore tahini here too – we usually buy a Lebanese brand – and use it all the time in dips. And can you imagine finding a truffle worth over $300K? Wow.. 🙂

    1. Tandy, how lovely to have a friend bring back vanilla beans for you from Zanzibar. Definitely best to bulk buy when making your own vanilla products. Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  6. Oh, I love tahini. I but a locally made one from the supermarket for conevenice sake but note the Celia buys a Lebanese one. I must get some to compare. When you talked of the scent of the frangipanis, I could almost smell them! Thanks for the tour.

  9. Oh I just adore frangipanis. They are one of the things I miss the most since moving away from sunny Queensland and down to cold Melbourne. Whenever I see a frangipani I can’t help but pick it up and smell it. So lovely.
