in my kitchen

In My Kitchen June 2017

First, a confession…I’ve shamelessly fallen off-the-wagon, so to speak. In a new year IMK post, made a resolution not to buy any more “stuff.” Five months in…oh well…guess will try  for the rest of the year.

In my kitchen this June…

Is culprit number one… a sprouting dish. Isn’t it lovely! Found in a gorgeous kitchen/home store while wandering around the picturesque streets of Bruges. Years ago I owned a stackable sprouting dish which I used for sprouting mung beans… I’ve no idea what I did with it and if I remember correctly, it was pretty awkward to use. At present I am growing cress and took this photo on day five. I know you can do the same on moistened kitchen paper in a container using a variety of seeds but with summer air conditioning on full blast, would constantly find the paper drying out. Apart from making egg sandwiches with cress, cress makes a lovely garnish for food, especially my beetroot cured salmon.

In my kitchen…

As this was my first time visiting Amsterdam, how could I not bring back a few useful and pretty blue souvenirs.

In my kitchen…

Is a lovely new flour shaker from Mum. We love to visit kitchen shops and she thought I might like a new one… guess she was right. Recently attended a sourdough dough workshop in Bread Ahead’s Bakery School at Borough Market, London. We all got to keep our dough scraper and some rye flour to feed our starter with. A very enjoyable few hours doing what I love… but I have to thank Celia from figjamandlimecordial for kick starting my love of sourdough bread and sending me some of her dried sourdough starter (Priscilla) over two years ago. I still have my sourdough starter named “Sabr” (which means patience in Arabic) on the go.

Although I haven’t opened this jar yet, I’ve already tasted these delicious sweet syrupy cherries on another occasion. My brother and sister-in-law stocks these gorgeous Amarena cherry’s in their store/coffee shop in Ireland. The blue decorative jar is so pretty and I intend using it for flowers for my table when all the cherries are gone. Also, these cherries would be perfect for serving on top of this homemade vanilla chocolate chip ice cream.

In my kitchen…

Some thoughtful gifts from family members from their travels…pretty bowls and a decorative oven dish.

I knew my new years resolution wouldn’t stand when my eyes fell upon this beehive cakelete baking tin… and a girls got to have some more kitchen bling, a vintage look cake tester.

In my kitchen…

The cutest honey dish and forest honey… another gorgeous gift from family. I love trying different types of honey and comparing it with honey from my own bees.
Although we have an amazing array of wonderful spices available in our souk, on my travels I usually replenish a few staples for my store cupboard. Different paprika, sweet and smoked and dark Urfa chilli flakes. This was my first time buying angel hair chill… used more as a decorative garnish as noted on the packet.

In My Kitchen monthly theme is now in the hands of our host Sherry, from sherryspickings.blogspot.ie If you would like to know what’s cooking or see some kitchen treasures, head over to Sherry’s blog and check out all the other IMK participants on her sidebar.

  1. Amarena cherries are seriously addictive, my favourite way to use them is to stuff amaretti with them, the almond and cherry is wonderful together. Love the antique look honey dish too.

    1. These cherries are very delicious Sandra but also quite sweet so a little goes a long way. Your amaretti biscuits sound delicious… I love cherry and almond too 🙂

  2. Hi Moyà
That’s amazing! I just bought a jar of those wild cherries 🍒 in syrup too. And I noticed one of the other IMK bloggers had those angel hair chillies 🌶. Such a small world 🌎. Love your Dutch souvenirs and the cakelet tin. Thanks for joining in this month.

    1. The cherries are delicious. Sherry, do you have a favorite way of using them with recipes? Saw the angel hair chillies on Lizzy’s blog and she had already used them to garnish a risotto. Look forward to joining next month too 🙂

  3. Yes… ‘stuff’… I’ve made a similar commitment and have been very good but there are things that slip through. I nearly bought something in Aldi the other day until I told myself I had survived 50 years without it so probably didn’t need it now. But are those sprouts looking lovely? As is that beehive cake tin – delightful!

Your mention of Borough Market is very relevant given today’s events. I can imagine that it seems very much more real to you. Thanks for the tour. xxx

  4. It’s hard not to collect some more “stuff” when you travel, especially to new destinations. Maybe you are better at convincing yourself than I am 🙂
Very sad and terrible what has happened last night 😦 😦

  5. I, too, am so very sad for this latest senseless tragedy. I pray for everyone’s safety and an end to these terrible attacks.
I love kitchen paraphernalia, too. I’ve pared it down in recent years but the urge never goes away.

  6. All your little finds are so gorgeous- kitchen bling, now that’s a great expression. And the saffron and pimenton are very exotic and tempting- bling in their own right.

  8. Hello Moya! That honey dish is so beautiful. I’ve never seen one like it. Is your new beehive cakelet tin from Nordic Ware? It looks like it. If so, I have their baby heritage cakelet tin. Mini cakes are ever so cute! (and portion friendly too 😉 ) Cheers, Kirsty xx

    1. Hi Kirsty, you are correct, the tin is from Nordic and I love the portion size too. My daughter thought I would love the honey dish… I guess she was right 🙂
