In My Kitchen January 2019

Hello everyone, of late it has been pretty quiet around this blog but I trust your new year has gotten off to a great start. Wishing you all a wonderful year ahead and hopefully it will not pass by as quick.

So this 2019 In my kitchen…

Since the last “In My Kitchen” post we traveled for a couple of weeks to spend time with family over the holiday season, something I haven’t done for many years. Although I packed a portable keyboard for my iPad with the intention of possibly doing a quick blog post… it inevitable never happened.

So, this time I got to sit back and relax while the rest of the family did the festive cooking over the holidays and wouldn’t let me (that’s for you dear sis) near the kitchen 🙂 It of course was very much appreciated because I know how exhausting (in a good way) the festive season is.

Brussels sprouts are an absolute favorite of mine and a vegetable must have with my Christmas meal. Do you have a vegetable must have on your Christmas menu? We love roasting brussels sprouts with a drizzle of olive oil, orange juice and balsamic for a change but also like them steamed. You either love or dislike brussels sprouts and thankfully everyone in our house loves them.

In My Kitchen….

A gorgeous fish knife and tin jelly mould. The fish knife was a gift from our local neighborhood coffee shop “Sonder” who noticed my love of vintage… how sweet and kind and I absolutely love the fish knife which I intend to use as a server for, you guessed, fish dishes.

No takers for jelly in our house but love using tin moulds for savory and sweet dishes, they food looks so amazing when turned out.

In My Kitchen…

Large spherical ice ball moulds and large square ice trays, do love how they look in drinks and of course you could pretty them up by adding herbs and bits of fruit or spices, just like when I make ice bowls.

A few more gorgeous bits and pieces from Nom Living, thankfully like the last pieces, survived the journey back in the suitcase.

In My Kitchen…

Is the brand of rose harissa Yotam Ottolenghi recommends in his latest cookbook “Simple.” You might remember from the previous IMK I mentioned a rose harissa recipe of his which I found online and had made that instead, as that particular brand above wasn’t available in Bahrain. As expected, both very different, the jar brand is sweeter and not as spicy as the online version. Although I’ve had a little taste, I’ve not cooked with it yet but it does taste good.

Some anchovies on standby, saves the running around supermarkets when you suddenly find you need them.

These old-fashioned (the one on the left ) Royal Worcester egg coddler was a market find on my travels, the other egg coddler bought in a kitchen shop. Just a fancy way of serving boiled eggs without the shell, greasing the container with a little truffle oil before adding the egg makes all the difference.

The “In My Kitchen” monthly theme host is Sherry from sherryspickings.blogspot.ie If you would like to know what’s cooking or see some kitchen treasures, head over to Sherry’s blog and check out all the other IMK participants.

    1. Hi Fifi thank you, the egg coddlers are so old fashioned but do love them. No battling with broken bits of shell as you might with a boiled egg served in an egg cup 🙂

  1. English cooking can be baffling to Americans like me — I don’t understand the need/use for egg coddlers. I feel like Mr. Weasley questioning Harry Potter about Muggle inventions. Ditto brussels sprouts — why they are always part of Christmas dinner? But your kitchen looks to have some very nice things this month, whether I understand them or not!

    1. Mae, not sure why the egg coddlers were needed but they are a pretty posh way of serving up a boiled egg. Have a great year 🙂

  2. hi Moya
oh those gorgeous egg coddlers! so sweet. funnily enough i was just thinking of buying some rose harissa about an hour ago. co-incidence! yum to brussels. hubby and i boith adore them. i think you’re right tho – it’s either love or hate them. i try to always have anchovies in the cupboard/fridge- so useful in pasta dishes etc. you know how i love ceramics and yours are just lovely. i have more to show in Feb’s IMK 🙂 LOVE that jelly mould but hate jelly. i have a fab copper fish mould for jelly but i’ve only used it once – for a fish terrine. happy new year. cheers sherry

    1. Sherry, hopefully you’ll be able to source the rose harissa easier than I did. Yes, you have some lovely ceramic finds on your IMK posts so looking forward to seeing more in Februarys post. I do love copper fish moulds too but sadly don’t own any 🙂

    1. Yes Tandy the Nom Living stoneware is gorgeous and really love the few pieces I own. The online recipe I found for the rose harissa is lovely too so I would give it a try 🙂

  3. I just ordered the rose harissa, thank you for passing on the recommendation. I look forward to reading about your recipe adventures with it. That pottery is gorgeous, the organic shape and color is stunning. I am going to have to pull out my egg coddlers, I haven’t used them in years. They are very like your own and your blog is the second time I have been reminded about them…sitting in the back of the cupboard. Happy New Year!

    1. Hi Liz, enjoy using your jar of rose harissa. The shape and color of the pottery was what first attracted me, Nom Living have some beautiful pieces. Time to pull out the coddlers… have a great new year 🙂

  4. Moya, I loved your addition of orange juice to roasted Brussels sprouts and will definitely try it. (Obviously I love Brussels sprouts, too. 🙂 My must have holiday — or any day — vegetable is asparagus. Also loved your ice cube trays — no more diluted drinks! Your vintage fish knife and egg cup are delicate and beautiful. What a treat it will be to enjoy them in the New Year! xo

    1. Asparagus is a lovely vegetable too Kim and mostly put them in salads. Yeah… another brussels sprout fan. 🙂 Although I love the big ice cubes, the smaller ones tend to chill the drinks quicker. Cheers to a great year ahead 🙂

  5. Love me some Brussels sprouts as well. Sounds like your holiday was wonderful and I wish you a happy 2019! I’ve got the same large ice cube trays, but I wish I had your spherical ones. The ones we have always leak out.
