do you have a herb mincer?

forgotten kitchen tool

This rolling herb mincer was right at the back of the kitchen drawer and I had nearly forgotten that I  even owned one. I have no idea how long it has been in the drawer, but I know it has been there for some time.

The herb mincer was given to me, possibly by my mother on one of her visits to see me. Mum knows how much I like kitchen tools and I guess she thought I just might need one of these. With all it’s rolling blades the herb mincer looks like it will deliver as a kitchen tool, and I do like how it looks. However if memory serves me correctly I do not think it had lived up to what is was supposed to do.

The herb mincer is not a kitchen tool that I would go out and buy because I generally chop or mince herbs using  a knife, scissors or a mezzaluna. Everything deserves a second chance so lets see if I find this herb mincer useful with some of my recipes…will keep you posted.

The Vegetable Peeler

2 vegetable peelers, swivel type

The vegetable peeler is an essential kitchen tool that makes peeling of vegetables and fruits much easier. I like to have at least 3 peelers in my kitchen… somehow on the odd occasion they make their way (unnoticed) into the rubbish bin with the discard peels. The annoying thing is, I only seem to discover this the next time I want to peel something.

A vegetable peeler with a really sharp blade is an essential cooks tool, it should be comfortable to hold, remove the bare minimum of peel (thus hanging on to more precious vitamins), resulting in less wastage. How many of you keep a peeler with a blunt blade? You struggle when peeling your vegetables and fruit and swear that you will go out and buy a new one.

The swivel peeler is a favorite and great for peeling easy cucumber ribbons for salads and  garnishes. Have you ever need soft butter fast?  Take the rock hard butter from the fridge and using the vegetable peeler, shave the butter onto a plate, the butter will soften in minutes. Using your vegetable peeler to sharpen pencils… well I can’t say I recommend that.

Do you have any tips or other uses for your vegetable peeler?

what’s in my kitchen drawers and cupboards!

Open up your kitchen drawers and cupboards and if like me, they are filled to capacity with knives, whisks, zesters, garlic crushers, peelers, mixers, processors, bakeware, plates, bowls… you name it and it’s in there. All this kitchen stuff has accumulated over the years. Do I really need or use all of these cooking tools, appliances, bakeware etc… !

My task is to go through all my kitchen drawers and cupboards and find the usefulness of all these kitchen items… which I like to call “my kitchen jewelry.” With each piece of “kitchen jewellery”  I ask myself……. “what do I use this for”? “How often do I use this”? “Has this piece of “kitchen jewellery” any other use”? In what food preparation is it most useful”? “Can I create great recipes using this cooking tool”? Hopefully saving it from being removed to a box and sent back out into the world through the local charity shop. Or will my “kitchen jewelery”  be reinstated back into its kitchen drawer or cupboard for further use!

So… let me get start! Will keep you posted!
