Squidgy Chocolate Torte with Fresh Strawberries

chocolte torte with strawberriesThis time it was a losing battle and with no other sweet dessert, cake or biscuit to barter with… my plan on taking  photographs the next day of the whole chocolate torte started disappearing, slice by slice. However, I managed to salvage a slice and set it aside with a little note saying… “this slice is for my food photography”! Each year I look forward to the annual  BBC Good Food recipe calendar which comes with an issue of their monthly Good Food magazine and last year was really disappointed when I found there was no 2013 calendar. Homemade Candied Orange Peel

candied orange peel-1998With the holiday season only weeks away this is the time of year when I find myself making lots of  homemade candied orange peel. Strips of candied orange peel dipped in melted dark chocolate, then chilled, are irresistibly delicious and make an impressive after dinner sweet treat, which your guests will guiltlessly devour… if you’re willing to share them! Candied orange peel can be made weeks in advance and used in sweet bread recipes like this Salted Caramel Focaccia with Rosemary and Vanilla or in cakes, cookies, desserts, ice cream and used for decoration on sweets and cupcakes. chocolate date cake-1256With Eid Al Adha just days away and with family and friends joining together to celebrate this festive occasion, I thought this would be a good time to post a decadent dessert cake with middle eastern flavors. Recently our cosy Words Bookstore and Café hosted a cookbook signing by Sarah Al-Hamad, author of Sun Bread and Sticky Toffee. Sarah gave a talk on how her cookbook evolved with her journey of date discoveries, which all began when eating a sticky toffee pudding. We sampled some delicious tasters, sticky date sponge with toffee sauce and a date and sesame espresso milkshake from her cookbook, which has sweet date recipes from everywhere. Continue reading
